Grants for landlords
Some government schemes can help pay for energy efficiency work in rented homes. Eligibility often depends on your tenant's circumstances, so check each one before you commit to work.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme (England and Wales)
Landlords can apply for a property they rent out. The grant is paid to your installer and comes off the price.
- £7,500 towards an air source or ground source heat pump
- £5,000 towards a biomass boiler
- £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump
- An extra £1,500 for an air or ground source heat pump in a home off the gas grid that uses oil or LPG, until March 2027
Boiler Upgrade Scheme grants don't count towards the £10,000 cost cap for 2030.
ECO4
The Energy Company Obligation funds upgrades through energy suppliers for eligible low-income households, including tenants. It has been extended to 31 December 2026, and there won't be a replacement supplier scheme. The Great British Insulation Scheme closed on 31 March 2026.
Warm Homes: Local Grant
Run through local councils, for low-income households in privately owned or privately rented homes rated D to G. Occupants don't contribute to the cost. Ask your council whether it's taking part and what it asks of landlords.
Wales: Warm Homes Nest
Open to private renters with the landlord's permission, for homes rated E or below, or D or below where someone has a qualifying health condition.
Scotland and Northern Ireland
Schemes differ. Check Home Energy Scotland or nidirect for what's available.
